woah hi that’s me!

Hello, nice to meet you!

My name is Sophie Stephens. I earned my Bachelor of Journalism in reporting and writing from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where I graduated summa cum laude. While there, I also completed a minor in Women and Gender Studies with an emphasis in media and an honors certificate.

After college, I picked up and moved halfway across the country to Vermont — a state I had never been to — to continue exploring journalism (and the world!) I was lucky to find myself a home right in the middle of the Venn diagram of what I love most about journalism — digital and public media.

I love putting stories together and meeting new people, which journalism marries well. While my first love in journalism was writing, I have been lucky to also explore editing and producing, design, web design, social media analytics, data reporting, audio and podcast production, newslettering and so much more.

I have always been a big reader, from following my dad along to work at the local library to picking out my own personal library from bookstores like Prairie Lights, an independent bookstore that I love in my hometown of Iowa City, Iowa. I feel lucky to have grown up in an arts and culture town, and find any opportunity I can to still enjoy all of those things, from art to writing to clothing design. I worked as a barista for over four years, and work hard to overcaffeinate in my daily life. I partnered with Rent the Runway in undergrad and continue to be passionate about sustainable fashion and lifestyle practices. I spend much of my time with friends baking or playing board games.

I find it important to find joy, love and care in my life, and give it back to others. That’s why I proudly support and advocate for: mental health care, women’s rights, BLM, the LGBTQ+ community, sustainability and a host of other groups that support basic human equality.

I’m so excited you’re here! Thank you for following along :)
